Canoe Run

Canoe Run is a beautiful HQ-CWF (High Quality Cold Water Fishery) and Class A Wild Brook Trout stream completely encompassed within the Elk State Forest and the Bucktail Natural Area.  In the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, near the headwaters of Canoe Run was a small mining operation which fed the coke ovens located along the Driftwood Branch of Sinnemahoning Creek.  There is some AMD draining into the headwaters of the left fork of Canoe Run.

The mission of the Cameron County Conservation District is a locally led Board of concerned residents striving to conserve, protect, restore, and enhance our natural resources.  The goals of the Conservation District include flood & erosion control, to maintain and/or improve stream habitat, to reduce and/or eliminate stream pollution, to promote public awareness & outreach, and to protect all natural resources throughout Cameron County . The Conservation District has been serving Cameron County for 40 years.

The purpose of the District’s grant request is to gather baseline data about the Canoe Run watershed.  In the past some mining operations have occurred within this watershed and some AMD is occurring in one of the tributaries to Canoe Run.  The District will conduct the following activities:

  • Research the history and any existing data pertaining to the watershed.

  • Hold two public meetings.

  • Conduct visual stream assessment.

  • Conduct water quality analysis of Canoe Run and it’s tributaries.

  • Conduct benthic macro-invertebrate sampling.

  • Habitat analysis of sampling sites.

  • Rod and reel survey.

  • Write conservation plan.
