Grant Application and Guidelines

Purpose of Conduction a Coldwater Conservation Plan

Coldwater Conservation Plans are useful in building local awareness and support for the long-term stewardship of coldwater streams and their surrounding watersheds.  The plans are meant to identify potential problems and opportunities for stream conservation, and may often also lead to more detailed watershed studies or projects, ultimately improving the health of coldwater ecosystems.

Grants of approximately $6,000 will be awarded for the creation of a Coldwater Conservation plan that will ultimately conserve and protect the coldwater streams of Pennsylvania.  This grant is meant to:

  • Gather existing data about the coldwater ecosystem;

  • Identify potential impacts, threats, problems and opportunities to our coldwater streams;

  • Formulate a plan of action for proposed conservation and protection strategies; and

  • Build community awareness and support for the conservation of our coldwater streams.

Program Focus

Grant applications will be reviewed and targeted to watersheds that:

  • Are located along streams that contain naturally reproducing trout populations, preferably Class A Wild Trout Streams;

  • Are listed as special protection waters within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (Exceptional Value or High Quality designated use as listed in Title 25, Chapter 93 of the Pennsylvania Code - http://www.pacode.com/secure/data/025/chapter93/chap93toc.htm);

  • Are located in watersheds that support significant recreational use;

  • The stream section is generally open to the public or indicates public utilization of the stream segment;

  • Shows significant use of partnerships, describing how organizations will cooperate to develop and implement the plan; and

  • A local organization takes the lead in planning, rather than a consulting firm.

Eligible Applicants

Organizations that have 501(c)3 non-profit status in PA, such as watershed associations, land trusts, TU chapters, conservancies, sportsmen groups, educational institutions and conservation districts, are eligible to apply.  Municipalities, counties and municipal authorities may also apply.  Organizations that do not have 501(c)3 non-profit status must identify a non-profit organization that will administer the finances for the grant (a pass-through organization).
